EVB having already posted her stellar review of the Oct. 20th DC gig, we'll just move along... Well, this wasn't especially a good night. We estimated fewer than 200 people in the place - despite Philly's well-established Goth community. Moreover, for no reason we could learn, the club had insisted on an 11 PM finale, so when both MP and GLJ ran over their allotted time the Mish's set was compressed into 45 minutes and six songs. But I'm ahead of myself...
**Mike P: All acoustic. (The electric set with James, Craig and Scott which we saw in DC on Wednesday 20th was not repeated on any of the next four nights.) Added Feel Free, Ground Zero, White Noise, The Stand (described as "the Yes version") and a *wonderful* older song called "Declare Yourself an Unsafe Building" which he called "the foundation of all my work with The Alarm". No "Spirit of '76" this night.
**GLJ: (not in order) Sweet Sweet Rain, Liquor Man, Uptown, Josephina, Kiss of Life, LKDMD (shown on setlists as "Love Drag"=), 20 Killer Hurts, ...Heaven, Gorgeous, Upstairs, Desire. Jay offered a rueful explanation for his sore throat, saying that when he'd gotten onto the plane in LA it was 98 degrees but when they landed in Boston it was *freezing* (pretty cold in Philly as well) and his throat hadn't been right since then...he still sounded pretty fine =).
** The Mish: unfortunately I didn't get notes on which songs were played but they did include "Sacrilege" (which Wayne introed with "People say we aren't playing enough stuff from 'Gods Own Medicine'. Frankly, we just forgot."), "Raising Cain", and "Swoon" (dedicated to EVB with "This one's for you again" =). Wayne's still using all his old hair-preening gestures despite not having much of that now (Note in general: there were lots more GLJ fans than Mission fans at these two shows (DC and Philly), and an apparent perception that the Jezebels, not the Mish, were the headliners - a surprising number of GLJ fans had never even *heard* of the Mission (and they weren't young kids, either). Presumably s'because the varying versions of GLJ have kept fairly active, while the Mish have barely been heard of here since 1990, but we still found it disconcerting...)
Very nasty ending to this show: it was no real surprise to be herded from the floor into the lobby after the set, but NO one expected them to use CHEMICAL MACE to drive everyone out of the building without so much as a word of warning! One of the most alarming things I've ever experienced as I suddenly began to cough and choke and realized *everyone* was doing the same. I heard plenty of astonished (gasping) comments as we hurried out onto the street so I assume it wasn't regular Trocadero policy. This can't be legal, can it? what about people with asthma or other respiratory problems (like my two roommates)? what about the poor vendors, forced to choose between overseeing their wares and continuing to breathe? Shouldn't the club at least give a final warning that people must leave before doing something so drastic? and why Mace a peaceful crowd to begin with?
(non-Jay fans may want to skip this next paragraph.)
--anyway, plenty of time to get air as we waited behind the club for the bands (Wayne told us the club had ordered *them* out as well!!). While EVB joined the group talking to Wayne, Judy and I spotted Jay; she had brought him some photos of him that Liz had taken in New York, and I summoned my nerve (I'm shy =) and asked him for a hug. Of course you can - it's bloody freezing out here, says practical Jay. =) So I finally had my long-imagined moment next to my angel, who smelled of clear cold air and smoke, and has the most astonishing turquoise eyes, and is just sublimely gorgeous.
(OK, you can all come back now....=)
and that was that. Stay tuned for Pittsburgh.

Hello everyone. I guess its time for another quick show review. For what
unforunately for reasons I'll go into later was a quick show. Mike put on
another really nice set. Changing it up with some diiferent tunes from the
night before. He also did a nice dedication to a fan he met before the show.
No special guests on stage but the addition of songs likeThe Stand and I
have declared myself and unsafe building. I think thats that title. GLJ was
very tigh and funny. More good Springsteen humour from the night before.
Next up it was time for the Mish. For some crazy reason they had to be off
stage by 11 oclock. Which meant they had to race through the set and could
only play one encore. The set started the same as previous nights up
through Raising Cain. I still think they backing track on Butterfly is to
loud. The vocals were really hard to hear. They followed this up with Wayne
coming up to the mike and saying hey was on the internet and read about some
guy not playing any God's Own Medicine songs the night before. :) There
excuse which was a classic they forgot. They made up for that with a rocking
Sacrilige. They followed this nicely with another list request. Once again
they did Swoon for Elizabeth. They followed with Tower and Deliverance.
Then due to the time problems only a quick version of 1969 for an encore.
Well Wayne if you are reading the list today thanks. Just to set the record
straight as I shouted out at the club i wasnt complaining. you did Serpents
Kiss/Over the Hills the night before which was great for me. My wife on the
other hand was very happy and she thanks you as well.

Well! What a night! I of course arrived at the venue
late (as usual) and unfortunately missed Mike Peters
as well as most of GLJ. Hopefully I'll be able to
catch Mike next time around (with Coloursound again
would be wonderful!). Unfortunately, the entire rest
GLJ was spent by me in the bar area chatting with long
lost friends and meeting new ones after scoring my
Mish goodies.
From the looks of the bar, it seemed as though I'd
have to use a little force in order to get my well
deserved spot up towards the front but lo and behold
after making our way around the sound board....the
floor was practically empty! I think my jaw fell open
first but then quickly turned to a grin knowing I
wouldn't be pissing anyone off to get a good view.
I'm not sure how much it filled up once the set
started as I was mesmerized by the Mish once again. I
didn't see any onelist members aside from Elizabeth
dead center in front of the mike stand, naturally. I
weaseled my way up before the set started and said my
quick hello.
The Mish sounded and looked great. There's still some
spring left in Wayne's legs yet! I wish I could move
around that much these days without feeling the
aftermath the next day. I saw one person taking some
photos but I don't know if it was a list member or
not. I suppose we'll find out.
As previously posted, the setlist was noticeably
lacking some favs like Wasteland, Blood Brother, and
of course Severina. But on the upside Sacrilege was
an excellent surprise and it rocked!!! I was unaware
that they would have to off by 11 and it was a total
mood killer when the lights immediately went on and
the security started hounding everyone to get out. It
wasn't like they had a disco thing going on or
anything and I've seen shows there before that go past
midnight. So we made it out to the lobby area doing
some last minute number exchanging when in typical
Philly style and class....they pepper sprayed the
lobby nearly killing everyone. Talk about ruining an
evening!
So out into the cold gasping for air with no jacket it
was and around the back alleyway to wait for the band.
Mike Peters came over (since we were banished to stand
at the corner of the alleyway and not get anywhere
near the door) to greet the fans as well as Scott and
Wayne. I saw Mark too but I didn't see anyone talking
to him. He seemed to be in a bit of a mood. I could
be wrong and that could just be his normal expression
since I've never seen him before but he looked rather
unapproachable.
Wayne was sweet enough to sign a few things and I was
able to coax a hug outta him. :-D
I was wondering if Wayne was laughing inside as he was
accosted by our town vampire complete with fangs which
he always wears. I tried to eavesdrop on the
conversation to see if Wayne was squirming having to
talk to this loser but I was myself being accosted by
another loser rambling on about I don't even know
what. So Wayne, if you're reading this....it's
ok.....we laugh at him too.
All in all, a bittersweet night. A hurried Mish is
better than no Mish at all, right?
That's about it for now (still a little groggy) and
sorry for rambling myself.
Thanks guys for a great show! Come back soon (less
hostile venue maybe)!
