That show seriously kicked my ass...
Mike Peters was great, GLJ was sooooo cool, and Wayne, Craig, Mark and Scott were phenomenal. Considering this was the first day of the tour, everything was fantastic! To be standing 5 feet from Wayne was quite a moment.
I happened to see several Mish Laminates floating around, right next to the stage in fact (i was the guy in black! goatee and bauhaus shirt, singing every song)... i am not a prolific post-er to the list, so i did not introduce myself (but look-out New York!).
Wayne seemed a bit suprised that a few of us knew the words to Raising Cain... it was quite funny to hear him refer to it as a new song!
Hope everybody that attended enjoyed it as much as i did!

From: "lrnelson" ** You're absolutely correct, MadBoy!! Phenomenal is exactly the word
I would use to describe the way they kicked-everybody's-@$$ in the place!! I
hope you were one of the people in the front row like me!! I had never been to
a Mish show before so I had absolutely no idea what to expect except from my
Carved in Sand CD. I was seriously impressed with Wayne's strong vocals and
everyone else on stage was buzzing with energy with every stroke of their guitars
and beat of their drums.
Considering this was the first day of the tour, everything
was fantastic! To be standing 5 feet from Wayne was quite a moment.
They definitely had nothing to worry about with their performance,
I guess all that practicing in LA and the night before in Boston paid off I was the little blond in the cranberry velvet right in
the front row, in front of Craig on the left of the stage. Not fast
enough to snag a Mish laminate, or get to the Rira before the show
for introductions. But I did see a large group of flailing bodies on
the right side of the stage all singing along so I'll assume you were
one of those folks and look out for you next time there's a Mish
get-together here in town!! Aha, so you're the one who can fill in the official song
titles for me when I submit my 'official' gig review of all 3 bands, eh? I
will admit to getting THAT song title right though!!
>Hope everybody that attended enjoyed it as much as i did!-MAD
It was definitely the concert-highlight of my year!!
Looking forward to even more nights like last night in the 21stcentury!!!
Rock on Y2K!!!

From: "Star *****" My Boston experience........
I had a great time at the show. Mike Peters and Gene Loves Jezebel were
both good and the Mission was of course fantastic. I had my place right up
in front of the stage near Wayne. Met a few other list members at the show
sporting their laminates. Tried to get into the Rira before the show but
they wouldn't let me in because my license is a bit bent up. So we wound up
spending our pre show time at McDonalds. Oh well. I'll definately be at
the Continental tommorrow night though. My only complaint is that the show
wasn't long enough.

SATURDAY - OCTOBER 16th, 1999 - BOSTON, MA - USA
RESURRECTION TOUR STARTS AND HISTORY IS MADE!!!
What can I say?? I expected it to be a GREAT show but it wasn't
JUST a great show - it was a totally PHENOMENAL EXPERIENCE!
From start to finish there were no disappointments, except that each
act couldn't have played the longer sets we're all used to hearing from
them. But with such an early show, and the club's need to re-open
the venue at 11pm as a dance club we were all shooed out of theplace by 10:15pm
As usual my PLAN A of getting into town early to meet up with people
before the show at the RiRA got totally blown by the traffic nightmare
of the Bo-Sox vs the Skankees game at Fenway Park that started at
4pm, (Sorry about that Cat!! And you too, Simmo!!) so I went with
PLAN B instead which included finding a parking spot 4 blocks from
Lansdown St. and arriving outside the newly-renovated Avalon Ballroom
(which now only says "PLAYHOUSE" on it and had absolutely NO
marquee announcing who was playing or if we were in the right place)around 5pm.
I was heading for the only entrance I recognized when someone called
out "Lyn??!?"...and I soon found out it was Tom, from the GLJ list!!
Dressed in his proper concert attire including black leather jacket, t-shirt,
jeans and a few well-placed piercings we talked for a few minutes and
bumped into a couple of other GLJ fans who recognized a familiar face
in our crowd and stopped to get caught up on what to expect at the show.
I started to wonder if I shouldn't check in with someone at the box-office
to make sure I was on the GLJ guest list as I'd planned so Tom and I
said we'd meet up again at the stage and I went off in search of the
stage door to find someone 'in the know' to confirm my pass (which
BTW was fortunately arranged for me as a result of being on the official
GLJ website team - thanks again, Dena!!).
Along the way I met up with Ecki and Nancy from the Alarm & ColourSound
lists and we all commiserated on our ticketless situation while we waited
for Josh or Jules to come back out and confirm things for us. Lucky Josh
got to work the merch table with Jules, and Paul (from RobisonRecords)
was there coordinating the GLJ stuff too, so we had to wait until after doors
opened to find out what had been keeping Joshy so busy once he'd
disappeared inside the stage door.
While we waited for the rest of the usual Boston MP fans to arrive we heard
the Mish doing sound check, and on my way over to the club I happened to
see Jay and Peter popping down the road for a coffee at the local Starbucks!!
A little while later Kristen Westhoven (from the GLJ onelist) told me she had
arrived just in time to hear Jay soundchecking to Sweet Sweet Rain (which
just happened to be their first number of the night!). :-)
The first few recognizable folks to arrive were Donna, Glenn and their friend
Jess, soon to be followed by Dougieieieieie and Macca, Leah & her friend Jess,
Michael (without Jen this time), Becky and Carol, and finally Michelle and a
newbie Boston-gig virgin named Donna. I was hoping to meet up with a few
more of the Mish-listers but I didn't see any of those infamous laminates in the
crowd so I didn't know who was who!
They were supposed to open the doors at 6pm but I'm pretty sure things were
running true-to-form and the line didn't start moving until 6:15 or so. Those of
us on the guest lists were able to find the appropriate list-keeper and get in
without any problem (whew!!!) and after a brief stop at the merchandise stall to
say hello to Josh and Jules (and Taylor!) we headed straight for the front of the
stage to stake our front row spots - left of center - next to the speakers!
Lots of great stuff on the merch table from all the bands - including AWESOME
tour tee's (GLJ's & MISH's were black - MP's was white w/navy collar & cuffs
and red & blue printing (including the 'poppy' decoration on the front and pics
and tour dates on the back!! - all for $25 each), hats, keychains, jackets, stickers,
and even a women's black strappy tank top with the MISH celtic symbol on the
front. Lots of CD's for sale, too, including Jay's new JEZEBEL record, the re-issue
of Heavenly Bodies, Mike's Rise Demo's and US Rise CD - several Mish/Wayne
CD's - but not the Resurrection/Greatest Hits one as that doesn't come out until
Nov. 2nd, or thereabouts.
At 6:30pm we heard Mike doing his soundcheck on stage and rushed to take our
places at the front. The newly-refurbished Avalon is a truly stylish club - much larger
in size now that it's incorporated the old Mama Kin's Playhouse, with bars in the lobby
and on both sides of the stage and dancefloor. The only disappointing element of
the show was that we didn't sell out the venue - and even though there was a decent
crowd of 600 or so (I'd guess) it was no where near their capacity of 1500 that it could
have held. Also, I don't know how expensive the beer was as I decided to be a
designated driver for the night but I did hear that bottled water was going for $4.00 each
(YIKES!! Can you say R-I-P-O-F-F???) It was still well-worth it for this line-up!!
Mike came back out as close to 6:30 as possible and played us a storming set of
9 songs (5 acoustic/4 electric), but I'll get to that in my next post...
setlists to come in my next installment, called: WOW!! WHAT A SHOW...
followed by a wrap up of after-hours stuff, called: AFTERSHOW AFTER-THOUGHTS!!
We did get to take pictures at this club, so if you have an inexpensive camera you can
bring to the show (like a cheapy disposable one) I'd recommend you bring it - just in
case. The security was low-key most of the night (about pictures being taken) but
they turned into tenacious sheep-herders when it came time to corral us back out onto
the street!!
DON'T MISS THIS SHOW WHEN IT COMES TO A CITY NEAR YOU!!
EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE A PLANE TO GET TO THE NEAREST STOP ON
THE TOUR - DO IT!! We've already had some Texans and a brit from singapore
at the BOSTON show - as well as a couple of brits from across the pond, as well!
So NO EXCUSES!!! Cheers till the next installment,
---Lyn

Subject: SPOILER: Avalon Ballroom, Boston, 10/16/99
[General disclaimer ... I'm very tired and can't be bother
to read through this again ... hope it's not too confusing]
The first trick was getting past the crowd of Red Soxs fans and
into the club. After, dodging a Home Run and taking cover from chants
of Yankees Suck we made it down to the Avalon.
Now for the second trick ... I haven't been IDed for booze in
10 years, but here I am getting IDed for and 18 and over club.
The bouncer absolutely wont let me in. I didn't have my drivers ID,
but I did have a credit card. As luck would have it, I had ticket on
reserve so I managed to convince the bouncer to let me get the tickets
and I'd run back to get the ID (Like hell was I going to get back
on the trolley to Riverview and retrieve my ID form the car 40 minutes
there and back no way) instead we walked around the block, (chased by
"Yankees suck" ... funny, I thought, 'When I was in Virginia these
knuckle heads were Yanks too ... heck to the Brits we're all Yanks')
After and nice stroll around Fenway Park, we got in line an walked in. ha!!!
We entered the club just in time to catch Mike Peters join up
with Craig, Scott and ???? (I'm so bad with names) They played
several songs, right now I can only remember 'spirit of 76',
I know the other 2 but at this moment I can't recall the names.
JLG played about 50 minutes and included all the hit's except Josephine,
which I would have loved to hear. But the new tracks rocked ... in fact
I woke this morning with 'Liquor Man' in my head ... I wonder way?
In general, the crowd was much smaller then I hoped for, but I guess
it was what I would have expected. But it grew steadily.
There where very few goth types and several drunks from the ball park
had migrated over. I'd say about an equal number of people with Red
Soxs jerseys and SoM Tees were present.
I overhead several people mention that they came to see GLJ because
some promotion the day before. It looked like the crowd was
pretty split but definitely leaned toward the Mish on the dance floor.
I my opinion the triple bill is perfect. Hopefully GLJ and the Mish
will both beable to play more then 60 minutes in NYC or Philly.
At the consetion table there was more apeared more GLJ stuff.
GLJ and MP both had CD for sale e and each had a tee shirt.
The Lish had short and Long Tees and a couple other things.
I did get a www.themissionuk.com pen on my visit there, and I saw
what looked to be stickers under a pile of tees, but for one
reason or another they weren't available.
I was keeping eye out for the Mish Laments and spotted one just before
the show started. Hi to Stephen, Kevin, Michele ... and
who else did I miss? I ran back to get my GF Suzanne and the intro started.
The standard Intro music stated about 9pm and the Mish came outin to the stage.
The set follows: Comments from the stage.
