I have a big library of them cuz I collect them...so it's always growing. yikes!

Some tips:
1. Never rely on just one book since different books have different levels of insight.

2. For those books that discuss biomechanics, *read* the text. The Calderon, Luard, Bennet and Harris books are good starters for these text discussions.

3. Once you have wetted your brain sponge with the starter books, practice by studying photos and see if you can decipher what is happening.

4. *Especially* study the real critter in person. Do not rely on 'book smart' to enable you to sculpt anatomy and biomechanics convincingly. There is *no substitute* for hands-on indepth observation. The living animal is the best teacher.

5. Handy thing to know: conformation is not anatomy and biomechanics. They are definitely symbiotic, but they are not interchangeable terms. Anatomy and biomechanics define the genus, conformation defines the breed or type. Knowing this beforehand speeds learning and makes it all infinitely more interesting, digestible and understandable.

Anyway, altho each of these books is extremely valuable in it's own right, the top picks to get you *started* are indicated with an asterisk:
